Nayul Kim regards painting as the medium that she could treat as free as she wishes in order to portray her visual experience and imagination. In her painting, there belies the artist's own system of time and space. When you paint a rectangle in black within the painting, the rectangle could turn out to be a flat surface or a deep, endless space. The time used up for the painting turns into space through the process of painting, and this way, unfathomable time and space could be bottled up in one painting.
Whenever Nayul Kim starts her work, she digs up the mind's cave. There underlies the mass of memory, which becomes the source of her work. From her childhood to adolescence, the artist had anemia that broke out all of sudden. When Nayul was 11 years old, she fell down from anemia in the schoolyard, and that morning, all body parts except her eyes came to a standstill. It was as if all other sensations vanished away. The only thing that she could do lying on the ground was to watch the remnants of images of the world that passed before her eyes.
The moment that became strange, the hazy faces in contrast to vivid background, the boundary with dancing colors and electricity.
At such instant, she finds new possibilities of perspectives to observe hidden surfaces in unexpected time and space in everyday circumstances. The various materials of her work derive from mutated perspective out of this sudden shock. If we were to say that Nayul's work is the process of locating isolated, unfamiliar images and finding the relations between their essences, her work is a play with unfamiliar images like a play with objects.
Nayul overlaps different layers, lays out fragments of one image, or cuts out the parts and fill them in with a different images. All of these are mixed up to create a complex structure in her painting. Upon the structure, the objects in her painting either expands or contracts to portray dynamics.
The juxtaposition of abstractioin - figuration and analog - digital images can be seen in Nayul Kim's painting. And, her painting depicts visual elements with different properties in a way that it captures a specific moment that could only be seen through this type of configuration.
It is hard to interpret the moment when she fell down defenselessly as a pleasing experience, but the peculiar pleasure that Nayul felt then became the soure for continuing her work.
The artist's visual experience comes alive into paintings with amusing imagination and she will continue to show invisible world in her painting.
To find the shapes and structures from something abstract, Nayul Kim digs up the mind’s cave and starts with one picture in her mind. The time consuming process creates multiple layers and builds a space on flat surface, and this way, unfathomable time layers are bottled up in a painting. In that space, she presents contrasting elements like abstraction/figuration and digital/analog at the same time. The various visual elements with different properties capture a specific moment that could only be seen through the painting’s configuration.
