Ko is Franco-Chinese artist born in 1992 who lives and works in Paris. After growing up in Hong Kong, he moved to France where he started painting, finding his own technique and discovering inspiration in Western urban culture.
In 2012, Ko cofounded the artists’ collective LTR (La table ronde what means ‘the round table’) which was residing in Saint-Denis, known as a troubled suburb of Paris. Similar to the famous Bateau-Lavoir, situated at the time in Montmartre, a poor, decadent and free-spirited area, Saint-Denis became a new artistic habitat for young painters, photographers, musicians, filmmakers, etc. Their works are a clear indication of social issues of our time.
Ko’s narrative paintings are fantasized, constructed by transposing elements from his personal life and the stories he has heard, into dizzyingly detailed and delightfully surrealistic pastiches. A variety of sizes of his works and transitions of space combine to a series of folk legends.
With his new-found technique and flashing colors, Ko paints mostly on canvas but also on paper and ordinary manufactured objects (such as television, fridge or motorbike), using acrylic and aerosol. In his work, he mixes elements from Eastern and Western cultures: from Chinese scroll paintings to pop symbols: comics, cartoons and everyday realities.
