Selections from Reade's most recent series, "Beach Lovers," which capture intimate moments between couples seeking solace from the Concrete Jungle on the shores of New York City's most iconic beaches: Rockaway and Coney Island.
"I spend a lot of time observing NYC beach-goers; their bodies swaying in the waves, splayed out half-asleep on sandy towels, or chasing small children around with more sunscreen. We are raw and exposed on the beach, stripped of our clothes, our makeup, our status markers. My involvement with the subjects is one of an observer, recorder and sometimes, voyeur. My intention is to capture the human experience of love and sensuality in public places, blending both street and documentary photography approaches to the beach. There is a shift in behavior from NYC's streets to the beaches of Rockaway, Fort Tilden and Coney Island. There is something about being on the beach that emboldens couples to enjoy more affectionate freedom, their inhibitions less hidden than anywhere else I've observed in the city. Beach Lovers is a collection of intimate moments shared by couples I’ve observed at the beach. This series is about the small moments of tenderness between couples, whether sharing a wet embrace, long laughs, or a lazy limb-entwined nap on a beach blanket. These photos illustrate love and sensuality in their purest states."
