Hakgojae Gallery proudly presents the works of Ma Liuming (b. 1969, China) in his solo exhibition, Sediment of Performance on view from August 17th (FRI) to September 16th (SUN), 2018. This exhibition is Ma’s first solo exhibition held in Hakgojae Gallery in 4 years since his last in Hakgojae Gallery in 2014. Ma Liuming has established global reputation through his performance series, Fen 〮 Ma Liuming. The artist’s alternate ego, ‘Fen 〮 Ma Liuming’ has left a heavy stroke in the narrative of contemporary art history by performing nude dressed as a woman, proclaiming the liberation of the body. Since the 2000s, Ma Liuming has been immersing himself in paintings, which he has originally studied. Ma’s recent paintings are an expansion of his previous series created by using the leakage painting method. The scenes of his past performances and images of fire, trees, sceneries that embrace Ma’s artistic experiences and art historical narrative becomes the subject for his paintings. These images reflect the various periods of Ma’s life. This exhibition is a chance to witness the new path Ma Liuming’s paintings are headed towards. Ma scratches the surface of the picture-screen with a knife to create numerous cracks and marks. The colors underneath the outermost layer seep through the cracks and add depth to the picture-screen. The cracked and torn marks on the picture-screen harbor a kind of pain. Ma Liuming’s paintings are the visualization of the exploration of expired time and traces of the body; the picture-screen accumulates the artist’s life, philosophy, and sincere expressions.
Ma Liuming was born in Hubei, China in 1969. He graduated from Hubei Institute of Fine Arts, with a bachelor’s degree in Oil Painting in 1991. He joined the Beijing East Village in 1993 and started to officially announce the Fen 〮 Ma Liuming series. In 1998, Ma Liuming became renowned in the international art world through Fen 〮 Ma Liuming Walks the Great Wall (1998), a performance where he walked on the Great Wall in nude. He has been invited to globally distinguished biennales such as the 48th Venice Biennale in 1999 (Venice, Italy) and the 3rd Gwangju Biennale in 2000 (Gwangju, Korea) to present his works.
