“I step in front of the canvas naked, as it were. I have no set purpose, plan, model or photography. I let things happen. But I do have a starting-point, which has come from my realization that the only true reality are my feelings, played out within the confines of my body.”
— Maria Lassnig
Hauser & Wirth is delighted to present ‘You Paint As You Are,’ a solo booth of works by Austrian artist Maria Lassnig (1919 – 2014), on the occasion of the centenary of her birth. One of the most significant and innovative painters on the contemporary art scene, Lassnig’s work is based on the observation of the physical presence of the body and what she termed ‘body awareness’. Emphatically refusing to make “pictures,” she has long focused on ways of representing her internal world. Through a selection of her important work made from 1987 to 2009, this solo presentation showcases how Maria Lassnig saw the major issues in the world from continuously new perspectives and link these to her own life.
The presentation coincides with a major solo exhibition of works on paper by Lassnig at Hauser & Wirth Zurich, and the retrospective ‘Maria Lassnig – Ways of Being’, which travelled to the Albertina Museum in Vienna from the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in September 2019. Other major exhibitions in the important European museums held this year include: ‘Maria Lassnig. The Collection Klewan’ at Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart, Germany, and ‘Lassnig- Rainer: The Early Work’ at Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz, Linz, Austria. Lassnig was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at 55th Venice Biennial in 2013.
