Carlos Mérida: Carnival in Mexico is a show of nine lithographs from Mérida’s eponymous 1940 portfolio. The Guatemalan-born artist spent the majority of his life in Mexico and is known primarily for his geometric canvas works fusing European Modernism with forms and subjects specific to the Americas. Carnival in Mexico was created before Mérida’s more well-known period and is part ethnography, part illustrative, exploring the variety of costumes donned during the pre-Lenten Carnival. Carnival in Mexico is the inaugural exhibition at our new gallery space at 830 Canyon Road! The opening is Friday, March 29, 6-8pm.
