At CHART ART FAIR 2017 Helsinki Contemporary celebrates art fair’s 5th edition with a curated duo show by Ville Andersson and Lukas Göthman. These two artists will present works that express their curious and joyful perception of our reality.
The abstract paintings by the Stockholm-resident artist Lukas Göthman (b. 1970, Stockholm Sweden) are based on text. The combination of works at CHART are from the 2016 series of thick-layered oil paintings with stand-alone words or phrases alongside Göthman’s signature text paintings with phrases that are repeated and repeated over and over again to create an abstract composition.
Göthman’s thick-layered oil paintings are created layer by layer, and depict words from real and imaginary travel journals written by the artist himself, which are part of his on-going project, the Journey. The textual elements become painted gestures, ultimately speaking their own language and poetry.
Ville Andersson (b. 1986, Loviisa, Finland), Young Artist of the Year 2015, is best known for his photographs that are often staged, sometimes dramatized situations, with actors or dancers as his models. Andersson has also concentrated on drawing and painting with great success. The artist moves very naturally between the different media, adapting the technique to suit the subject matter and constantly looking for new ways of expression to master. Thematically he has dealt with the concept of empty spaces as a part of visual expression, the experience of the colour white and its connotations of silence and in his latest works how the sense of materials can be transmitted through abstract compositions. At CHART ART FAIR Helsinki Contemporary will show recent and new drawing series alongside photographs created especially with the fair in mind.
When looking at Ville Andersson’s and Lukas Göthman’s work they are connected on several levels. They work in different media and the trace is not the same. At further inspection the artists work is linked on many levels, both conceptually and through their approach to their artistic practice. Both artists work with great precision and with great patience. Creating distinctive spaces or worlds is also something the artists have in common. This combination of artists will create a coherent, but yet a challenging experience for CHART ART FAIR 2017.
