Pieces of Eight draw together the themes of injustice, love, time, rhythm and dimensions that are constant throughout Lucy’s work. The painting that gives the show it’s name physically suggests time with it’s narrative format and timeline. Within this, Ash has taken eight significant periods, rendering them as if they were the building blocks of her life. Ash further plays with the theme of eight by deconstructing key areas and themes within the main canvas and using them to create new works, that focus on reworking older canvases. The juxtaposition of perspectives on the same themes over time, coupled with the layering and intensity of paint, offers a rich dimension to Ash’s work; resulting in a dynamic and abstract portrayal of theme, that is full of depth and vibrancy of colour which gives each work it’s emotional weight and unifies the collection.
