Denise Duong never thought that being an artist could be a career. “I grew up in a family that came from Vietnam right before I was born, and we were all new to everything,” she says. “A career was something that could help the family and was stable and made money. My family presented careers to me as young as I could remember, and none of them sounded appealing: doctor, dentist, optometrist, accountant….dental hygienist. I knew I didn’t want to be anything but an artist.” So she threw herself into art, attending art school, and then traveling the world and accumulating experiences. Named one of Southwest Art Magazine’s 30 under 30 in 2008, Denise’s work is now represented in galleries around the nation. She travels and creates art full time.
Duong says, "Savoring all the moments that we experience is a story, it’s living life. For me, taking real life and adding some elements of surprise is the perfect potion for both life and art. Reflecting ideas of innocence and tranquility and including nostalgically sentimental references create the spirit of my work. Life is too complicated to paint anger and sorrow– I prefer my paintings to be about joy and contentment. I set my ideas in a delicate– you could almost call it naïve–manner, which I do to soften the harshness of life. Learning from and loving the past, feeling the excitement for tomorrow, but living for today, are the ideals I weave into all the layers of my art."
Traveling to discover food, culture, and adventure is one of the engines of Denise Duong’s art. The pleasures and simple sensuality of the world create the inspiration for her imaginative work, and create the narratives she uses to build her paintings. In her work she shares her passion for enjoying life and absorbing experiences– both exotic and everyday.
Oklahoma City based mixed-media artist Denise Duong creates vignettes of adventure. Duong uses paper and drawings on painted landscapes to construct delightful worlds for her characters to inhabit. Elegant women, dapper men, odd little banjo players, ducks and bull terriers ride old motorcycles through hilly countrysides, wear evening gowns and opera gloves aboard hot air balloons, play music and drink wine on boats, or pedal flying machines far above exciting new cities. Duong’s work seems as much about romance and friendship as it is about travel: similar characters tend to show up over and over in her work, though always in new costumes and locales.
