Press Release

Jason Haam is pleased to present A Touch of Evil by Mircea Suciu. Recent works by the artist will be on display in the gallery’s first and second floor exhibition spaces. Following the mural-like installation at the 2014 Gwangju Biennale, this will be the artist’s second time exhibiting in Korea.

Process is equally important for Suciu as is the final image. He manipulates his works through the monoprint technique to explore the various interpretations found within a singular image. Suciu prints found or photographed images onto acrylic films, which are then transferred onto linen. By doing so, Suciu highlights the multiple facets of a single body of work and his process simultaneously. As he enhances images through this process, Suciu provides diverse perspectives and means of representation to his works.

Suciu’s works examine the duality of humanity, revealing a bleak present and future caused by the cruelty of human behavior. This violent cycle caused by the human tendency to deny our inherent nature drives the society to commit atrocities, which in turn, inhibits progression. The title of the exhibition, A Touch of Evil, explores the occurrence of the negative side of humanity and how civilization intrudes upon evolution and the consequences thereafter.

Within the spectrum of “naked reality” and “hidden reality,” Suciu’s works utilize concealment as a juxtaposition to explore the human weakness and to unveil the frailty of the human mind. He emphasizes the need for balance of reason and emotion while commenting on the irony of a society that values and appropriates destruction in place of preservation.

Mircea Suciu was born in 1978 in Baia Mare, Romania. After having studied painting at the Cluj Art School in Romania, Suciu’s artistic career began with a group exhibition at Mestna Galerija in Ljublijana, Slovenia, followed by many more in spaces such as Espace Louis Vuitton in Paris, France, Fondation Francès in Senlis, France, Maison Particulière in Brussels, Belgium, MODEM Centre for Modern and Contemporary Art, Debrecen, Hungary, and more. His works were shown in the Gwangju Biennale in 2014, the 4th Biennial of Prague, and the 11th Biennial of Istanbul.

Suciu currently lives and works in New York.
