We are pleased to present new work from Bay Area/Hawaii mixed media collage artist Michael Cutlip and Jon Lynn McCallum, narrative photographer from Redding. Both of these artists have been introduced at JAYJAY during the last year in group situations, but this will be their first featured exhibit with the gallery.
Michael Cutlip begins his process by wandering the city streets in search of paper. He has no particular expectations for the type of discarded material that becomes the palette for his work. Cutlip builds up numerous layers of collage on his panels, some of which will never be visible to the viewer as the layers overlap. This is what Cutlip describes as a method to let go of the precious quality. This piling up is visible from the side of the panel that exposes a strong sense of history. Through the act of freedom, knowledge, and exploration Cutlip lets the work tell him what to do.
Michael Cutlip received his BA in Studio Art from California State University Hayward. His work can be found in numerous collections including, the Microsoft Corporation, Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara, CA, Bloomingdales, Sutter Health, and Singer/Songwriter Sarah McLachlan.
Jon Lynn McCallum combines digital and hands-on processes to transform and rebuild his photographic images. Through his process McCallum uncovers realms of contradictions: feeling/intellect, imagination/reality, past/present/future. He describes these as, “frail liminalities of human being”. McCallum aims to empathize with the human spirit in spite of misgivings, inconsistencies that develop these contradictions. Through the act of making, McCallum creates an awareness of the individual self and the outside world in order to affirm the essence of being.
McCallum received his MFA from California State University Chico. He has exhibited regionally as well as internationally at the Pingyao International Photography Festival in China. McCallum is currently an Instructor of Graphic Design at Shasta College in Redding, California.
