October 27 – December 2nd, 2018
Jen Mauldin Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Gust, a virtual show on Artsy.net featuring the work of Oklahoma-based artist Danny Rose. The exhibition continues through December 2nd, 2018.
Gust features a collection of small collages on wood panel and paper inspired by the artist’s fascination with conjured spaces. Having previously explored collage with his series of paintings Strange Tide, Rose builds on the concept of arranging scraps from discarded paintings as he meditates on their forms. Paring pieces of his canvases down, the colors and forms inspired the composition of each work in a fresh way.
“My work is inspired by the colors and forms of the natural world; combining nature and abstraction,” Rose explains in an artist’s statement. “In this new series, the work moves further inward and focuses less on my memories of place and more on the space in between. The landscape is still present, but not always indicated by a horizon. Sometimes we are higher, closer to the wind. From a distance (the works) can appear to be soft and edgeless. Yet when they are encountered up close, their parts are revealed.”
Minimalist landscapes such as “Cloudbreaker” convey the descent of an incoming storm over a dusty hill through abstract shapes and a palette of vivid desert hues, while the blues in “Swell” explore the crash of waves upon an eroding shore.
Currently a visiting professor and artist-in-residence at Oklahoma City University, Rose received his BFA from the Art Institute in Dallas in 2012. A former artist-in-residence The Guapamacátaro Center for Art and Ecology in Michoacan, Mexico and (Artspace) Untitled, Rose has also exhibited at The Beeville Art Museum, Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Museum and the Eisemann Center for Performing Arts. Rose will be curating the upcoming exhibition Journey Through Death: New photographs from Andrew Williams opening November 16 at Sandbox Studios in San Francisco, as well as the group show Flux opening November 28 at the NIAD Art Center in Richmond, California.
Gust will be followed by an exhibit highlighting the work of female artists represented by Jen Mauldin. All online exclusive shows will highlight accessible works curated for the collector in mind.
