“WANDERLAND”

Karin Skiba brings her image making to the high desert with the WANDERLAND, a solo exhibit at the Joshua Tree Art Gallery. Using a constructed collage technique with photos and paintings on paper, the colorful and dynamic work shares her experiences of the first year in her Joshua Tree studio. WANDERLAND imagery is the result of “wandering” within the studio environment while living in wonder of the desert.

Though fresh and playful, the intent of the work stems from a serious unfolding personal journey and contains portraits of archetypal women that have been continuously evolving for forty years. The women reach out to the viewer as the gaze is directed at them. They are coupled with trees, as powerful peaceful symbols and bring resolve crossing over landscape and time. Memories that come in dreams, are layered into new realities and realized in the formal construction of the work.

WANDERLAND is a pleasure to see and experience at the JTAG, with the artist proving herself to be a strong cultural force within the community and high desert environs of Joshua Tree.
