Katrine Levin Galleries is delighted to bring Interrogating Dreams, the first U.K. show by the internationally acclaimed Chinese artist, Gao Xiang, to the Coningsby Gallery from 30 October – 4 November, 2017.
Gao Xiang's poetic works are steeped in Chinese traditions and mythology, balancing between dreams and reality, abstract and figurative.
The paintings, inks on paper, silk prints, and installations that form “Interrogating Dreams” are an examination of the human spirit, felt in the timelessness of the landscapes and the imagery of animals, especially the horse. For Gao Xiang, the horse is a complex force that not only holds the mysteries of the universe and Chinese traditions, but is a symbolic extension of his soul.
Gao Xiang's acrylic-on-glass installations follow the theme of his paintings and works on paper while exploring the 17th century Chinese landscaping concept of "borrowed ”. The transparency of the glass transforms the installation depending on the colour and texture of the background.
