Philipp Schwalb’s (b. 1984) highly complex art cosmos is characterized by contextual as well as formal references ranging from the history of painting, philosophy, and pop culture to anthroposophy and rap music. His reference system thus functions organically, and develops and continues to grow. This movement of an inner vitality of the works defines the rules of his art.
At the center of his artistic practice is painting. Embedded in a broad system of secondary media - such as the titles of paintings, exhibition texts, flyers, and publications - Schwalb has developed the three pictorial figure groups: the "Ich bin ... BIA“ paintings, the "WEZEN?!$“ and the "Nakkis". Following the principle of the triad, they embody rationality, spirituality, and the body.
In 2015 all three figure groups were presented in the Kunsthalle Basel.
With the exhibition De.mSeignaZ.U.WertSeign at KIRCHGASSE, these groups of figures are now symbolically dismissed to present a new series of works.
A textbook with contributions by Hans-Christian Dany, Dominikus Müller and Judith Welter will be published in conjunction with the exhibition.
