Chicago, IL (May 19, 2015) - KM Fine Arts is pleased to announce Circles and Lines, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Gary Lang, on view from May 23, 2015 – July 25, 2015 at the gallery’s Chicago location at 43 East Oak Street, Suite B, Chicago, IL 60611. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, May 23, from 6-9pm with the artist in attendance. A catalog will accompany the exhibition and features essays by critics Peter Frank and Donald Kuspit, as well as a Q&A with fellow KMFA artist and friend, Eric Fischl.
Gary Lang (b.1950), a Los Angeles native, is best known for his aggressively painted circles, or “tondos” as they are referred to in the canons of art history. He has been painting his circles and lines jointly since the 1980s. This will be the artist’s first solo exhibition in Chicago and his first showing of work in the city since 1995.
Gary Lang’s monumental circles are all encompassing and exude intense vibrations of color and light nearly hallucinogenic in their nature. His act of painting is intensely physical and requires resolute focus on the interaction between brush, hand, paint, and canvas. This level of concentration compels Lang to be “hyper-present” with his works—an element that translates from artist to viewer. In his essay, Peter Frank describes that the “almost volcanic energy Lang invests in his art does not command and overwhelm his canvases, but seeps through their visual cracks, teasing and worrying the eye rather than ambushing or overwhelming it. As a result, Lang’s paintings do not erupt with fury; they hum with intensity.”
Alluding to the meditative nature of his painting process during his Q&A with Eric Fischl, Lang states, “I make preliminary color and sequencing decisions prior to painting to minimize distraction and the burden of thinking while applying paint. The ‘colors’ are amalgams of pigments, chemicals, and metallic particulates that I mix with the intention of circumventing predictability, enabling me to see anew. I juggle colors and spatial ratios compulsively prior to painting in order to get a mutable footprint, and adjust and articulate my notations spontaneously once painting.” Lang has likened his painting method to being a “blindfolded juggler” who doesn’t see his work until it is complete, thus freeing himself from the bias of seeing a work-in-process and allowing a degree of chance to inhibit his work.
The results of his efforts are paintings that are both rhythmic in nature and silent in voice—they engage you, whether you are willing or not, in an intense intellectual and spiritual dialogue with your own mind.
Gary Lang’s distinguished career boasts significant museum and solo exhibitions worldwide, including but not limited to the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the McNay Museum, San Antonio; The Haags Gementemuseum, The Hauge, Netherlands; the Institute of American Studies, Barcelona, Spain; Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven; the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; the Liu Haisu Art Museum, Shanghai, China; the Museum Ludwig, Koln, Germany; Albright-Knox Museum, Buffalo, The Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn; and the United Nations Plaza, New York. His paintings can be found in significant private and public collections internationally and has been critically reviewed in numerous publications, including the New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Reader, Art Week, KCRW Art Talk, Art & Auction, The Wall Street Journal, ARTFORUM, ArtNews, and Art in America. Gary Lang now lives and works in Southern California.
