Arabian Happy Ending explores the political and social tensions in the Middle East through the experiential sensation of sugar and video, giving the viewer a glimpse into a culture that is underrepresented and often plagued by misconception.
For the duration of Art Basel 2016, KREËMART will present Arabian Happy Ending, a happening with internationally acclaimed Egyptian artist Youssef Nabil. Located 7 minutes walking distance from the Messeplatz, and 1 minute away from Wettsteinplatz, Arabian Happy Ending is an event exploring political and social tensions in the Middle East through the universal and experiential sensation of sugar and video. Nabil expresses these frictions in the form of a video, Arabian Happy Ending, that depicts scenes of love and lust throughout the history of Egyptian cinema, a subtle yet powerful tension in the Arab world. Indeed, the bridge between a sexualized civilization and sugar are intertwined through the use of literal taste. KREËMART and Youssef Nabil created limited edition plates that have been garnered with gold guimauves sweets and relished with oriental aphrodisiac flavors in collaboration between Ladurée and Bernardaud. Nabil uses these arousing confections as a way to discuss and remind us of the sexual inhibitions of the Arabian world.
