Kuivato, a Creative Gateways Gallery Opens a New Year with New Masterpieces
The shifting from one year into the next is an event celebrated around the world. The symbolic weight of this change cannot be overstated. In a new year we see potential for change - both in ourselves and our environment, we see a cleaning of the slate, and we feel the excitement of possibility. These prospects can be especially exciting for artists, who are constantly in creative cycles of production. This January, Kuivato celebrates fresh creativity in their new exhibit New Year, New Masterpieces. Join them for the opening reception, Friday, January 4th, from 5-8pm, during 1st Friday in the Galleries.
Blown glass artist Spooner Marcus incorporates age-old pueblo designs into intriguingly modern structures to create many of his pieces. The play between these elements makes his work continually invigorating. On his “Black and White Gourd,” hard edged patterns are placed on a smooth and organic shape, while his “Cobalt Blue Double Spout” classic design is set against striking, almost fluorescent colors. Ultimately, Spooner creates beautiful newness by paying homage to the creativity of the past.
Michael Colpitts captures the ebullience of newness in his mixed media paintings. One way he accomplishes this is by using bold and uplifting colors, such as the deep reds of “On the Way Up” or the ensconcing blues of “Aqueous.” Michael also commits to innovation by repurposing materials he has accumulated in his travels around the world. Textiles, patterns, and even materials like pressed plants are incorporated into his work to add texture, theme, and depth. With Michael, the old can become new, and in the process project a brilliant and effusive quality.
Join Kuivato, Friday, January 4th, from 5-8pm for the opening reception of New Year, New Masterpieces. See new pieces from Michael and Spooner, as well as the work of all our represented artists. Explore the gallery, talk to local artists, and enjoy small bites and drinks.
