»Where is here? #1: Malerei und Gegenwart « is a manifold survey of the most recent developments and directions among painting and, at the same time, a critical selection of the outstanding positions, works, and personalities after 2000. It is an oppositional exhibition which confronts pieces ceasing the painterly with pieces just about to become paintings.
It is an exhibition which separates and yet incorporates most contrary initial situations, styles, and attitudes. And as the question for the present finally has to be answered individually, exactly this is the challenge the artists and we beholders have to meet. Just as French philosopher Louis Althusser asked already in »Machiavelli’s Solitude« in 1977: How to think the new in the absolute absence of its conditions?
