LOS ANGELES, CA (Sept. 17TH, 2015) L.A. Artcore is pleased to present Los Angeles artist Michael Flechtner, who has developed and refined a body of sculptures of neon light for over a decade. Within this timeframe, Flechtner has explored not only the technical possibilities of the medium, but also explored a visual lexicon of symbols in American popular culture. Considered a dying craft by the time Flechtner began his training in neon fabrication in 1985, the artist helped resurrect the medium by teaching its techniques while innovating new works. A multitude of socio-psychological themes belie much of the artist’s body of work, most incisively articulated through a personalized treatment of iconic images and objects. Using the medium of popular culture and its images meant for mass appeal, Flechtner subverts such benign readings in favor of delving many levels below into America’s subconscious. Having recently been commission by the U.S. Postal Service, Flechtner created an official United States stamp, was the recipient of a Getty Trust Fellowship, has exhibited widely in Southern California and has been extensively collected.
