Vincent Bioulès - Le motif et la lumière

A dozen large paintings are the foundation of these new works where the Mediterranean is again scooped by the painter, in all its different lights, mainly in Carnon and the Étang de l’Or, around Montpellier. Some incursions inland, to the Pic-Saint-Loup and Donnafugata, will transition with a series of paintings seized in the artist's garden in the summer 2016, in a "violence of colors and lights entirely unique. " Smaller paintings, drawings, tempera, pastels complement this set addressing the thematic their own way. No less than thirty new works will occupy the walls of the gallery for this exhibition articulated around a monumental canvas nearly four meters wide.

The passage through the abstraction of Vincent Bioulès at the time of the Supports / Surfaces movement marked a strong footprint expressed in his figurative painting: "This is the Languedoc landscape that inspired me to paint," he likes to say, and furthermore, "what I'm doing today would not exist without the previous experience of abstraction {...}" and recalled that the views of the hills of Aubrac, of lagoon shores of clay sea, in the neighborhood of Montpellier, the Céret mountains, it is the light that is "the main character of the painting." it is it who deconstructs the simple sight to offer the viewer the power of wonder binds to childhood impressions. Despite the exalted stillness to a kind of "vitrification" of the moment, the glow mingles with an inescapable feeling of suspended time. Also, more than a visual stroll, the landscape requires the viewer to go on a mental journey to shared emotion.

The emotion is the "royal road to knowledge" recalls pedagogue, Bioulès Vincent, who was a teacher at the Fine Arts in Aix en Provence, Nimes, Montpellier and Paris. He wants his paintings to be "both scholarly and popular," that is to say "equally perennial and accessible", which must show "what is irreplaceable in a moment." His current works tell us indeed "the pleasure of living" claimed by the painter in touch with nature. Their colors dense, almost saturated - direct homage to Matisse - vibrate as a quest for truth, "that appears at the tip of each extreme experience”

Founding member of the Supports-Surfaces movement among others such as Jean-Pierre Pincemin or Viallat Claude, Vincent Bioulès moves away from the movement in the mid 1970s to return to figurative painting. The deep imprint of years of abstraction is still being felt in the rigor of the compositions and virtuous arrangement of colors.
