Is it live or is it Memorex? The title comes from the iconic Memorex advertising campaigns of the 1970’s and 1980’s where live recordings were done on audio cassettes and VHS tapes and then played back, asking audiences if they could tell the difference. The question of what is real and what is a copy is at the heart of the Memorex Exhibition. As we enter the age of VR and all forms of augmented or distorted reality, how does our brain experience this? How do we relate to the notion of reality and process its layers in traditional painting? Artist Marc Dennis through his hyper-realistic paintings is asking you, as viewer, to decipher and process what you are seeing. He sets out to create alternate realities intended to strike the eye and seduce the mind using an old Master technique. The works on view are all hand painted in the troupe-l’oeil style inspired by art history, still life, flora and fauna and pop culture references.
