Fascinated: Honoring Mireille Clapp

This month we are honoring internationally known sculptor and scientist Mireille Clapp. Mireille graduated from MIT and was a professor of materials science and mechanical engineering at UMASS Amherst. In fact, she became the first woman to receive tenure in UMASS's School of Engineering and paved the way successfully for subsequent female candidates.

Once retired, Mireille dove into becoming a fully fledged artist. Starting her career with large outdoor sculpture, Mireille then transitioned to making smaller wall sculptures. She had a strong fascination with the dichotomy of materials and textures. Always mixing metal with wood, rigid with soft, Mireille investigated the ways materials interacted with each other and the world around them.
