About
Hiroshi Ōnishi continued the tradition of “nihonga” painting, coined in the Meiji period. Manually he extracted 16 shades of luminous blue, ranging from pale to intense ultramarine color. For the first time a Japanese painter used real lapis lazuli pigment.
