On the afternoon of February 23, 2013, Linda Gallery will present the exhibition “THE BEING OF NON-BEING: A KIND OF PERSONAL EXPRESSION ON ‘META-PAINTING’”curated by Lu Mingjun. The twelve artists Chen Yujun, Duan Jianyu, Gong Jian, Guan Yinfu, Li Qing, MadeIn Company, Wang Jianwei, Wang Mao, Yang Jian, Zang Kunkun, Zhang Hui and Zhao Yao have been invited to take part in this exhibition.
The theme of this exhibition is “meta-painting,” experimental explorations of painting itself. Unlike before, this exhibition will not limit the discussion of “meta-painting” to the realms of form, image, medium or aesthetics, but instead extend it to such dimensions as objects, installations, politics, culture and cognition.
The exhibition uses the seemingly contradictory wordplay of “The being of non-being” to explore the complex, multifaceted nature of meta-painting. Simple applications include: it is perhaps not abstract but an installation, but it is actually also abstract; it is perhaps not realist but conceptual painting, but it is actually also realist; it is perhaps not paint/object but form, but it is actually also paint/object; it is perhaps not political but aesthetic, but it is actually also political…. This exhibition will use similar personal accounts from many perspectives to explore, through categorical definitions and interpretations of “theory of being,” the inner space of tension in painting, and the subject’s sense of diffusion and alienation, and thus open up our experience and understanding of painting itself and the physical world of the individual.
Thus, this is not an exhibition. It is also an exhibition. This is an exhibition of paintings about painting. Perhaps it is an exhibition about exhibitions.
