LMAKgallery is pleased to present Sculpture a group show featuring the work of Doreen McCarthy, Robert Raphael and Rachel Mica Weiss. This show is a preview of the artists who will have solo outdoor sculpture presentation in the backyard respectively in 2016 and 2017.
Doreen McCarthy is a sculptor who explores developing sculptures that continue to circumvent barriers of spatial articulation with non-traditional materials such as plexiglass and vinyl. Physically shifting the scale, material and site alters the subjectivity of experience. McCarthy’s work has been on view in Heskin Contemporary, NY, Indiana University Institute of Art and Design and the foyer of a Philip Johnson building in Berlin, Germany. A review in Sculpture Magazine for Outdoor Voices at the gallery is forth coming.
Robert Raphael draws from the complex history of decorative art, a tradition that both runs parallel to and is intertwined with the history of fine art. His most recent project are architectural pillars that relay structure yet are composed out of intricate and ornamental forms dripped in lushes glazes. The outdoor sculpture installation will be on view at the Bronx Museum after which it will be presented at the gallery.
Rachel Mica Weiss has an ongoing conversation about restraint and material assumptions as can be seen in these works, using frames, pedestals, and other indicators of value are integral to the object itself. The highly worked yet seemingly disintegrating are a perfect iteration and questioning of reality and illusion through material as well as subject matter; a subtle deception. Weiss recently finished her permanent installation at the 1Hotel in Brooklyn, and her work is currently on view at the Katonah Museum of Art, NY.
