Knowing Its White, Guarding Its Black: Featured Exhibition of Longmen Art Projects for Art Taipei 2016, Following the launch of Longmen Art Project's previous exhibition of Walasse Ting, whose spindle of creation has long been built upon colorful expressions, this year on the contrary, we decided to exhibit a series of black-and-white-themed modern and contemporary paintings of Asia. Laozi, the founder of philosophical Taoism, said in Tao Te Ching: "One who preferring white, prefers black also, is in himself, an image ofthe world. " "White" here refers to light, and "black" means darkness, so bear the light in mind while defending the darkness,and not get carried away, people would follow eventually.
Along with the global popularity of this trend, in the mid-20th century, Asian abstract art movement was emerging, and the metaphoric comparison between black and white colors in traditional paintings started to collide and merge with Western modernism, which inspired the Monochrome Painting Movement in South Korea, and many other Asian artists of the likes: Chu Teh-Chun, Richard Lin, Lau Kwok Chung, Chuang Che, Hsiao Chin, Chen Tingshih of the Fifth Moon Group from Taiwan, Lui Shoukwan from Hong Kong, Wang Huaiqing from Mainland China, etc., and later cultivated and extended to the works of Asian contemporary artists such as Kim Tschang-Yeul from South Korea,Ye Yongqing from Mainland China, Huang Zhiyang & Lu Mingte from Taiwan, and Akira Yamaguchi from Japan. Even "the Flower Thief" Walasse Ting, who was famous for mastering in bright colors, since his creation entered onto the stages of painting on rice paper with colored ink from the 1980s, he would also inevitably return to the ink painting basics from time to time, and completed alimited number of ink on rice paper paintings.
