M Contemporary Art is pleased to announce its participation in Detroit Art Week 2019, and the opening of Brian Day’s A Moment Away, his second solo exhibition of photographs, opening July 18, 2019 as a part of On View, Detroit Art Week’s official night of gallery openings. The exhibition runs through August 17, 2019.
In addition to the Brian Day exhibition, gallery affiliated DAW events include a collection visit of the Burris Law offices, and studio visits with Senghor Reid and Robert Mirek on Saturday, July 20th, and Scott Vincent Campbell on Sunday, July 21.
A Moment Away presents a different facet of Day’s prolific body of work through the use of color to convey his feelings through the process of making these images. Stepping away from the cacophony of the everyday, the “where” doesn’t matter — only that there is space to reflect. In this series, Day provides the viewer a place to do as much. In much of his work, he engages the viewer in constant action — conversely, in A Moment Away, Day explores those moments when we are alone, sharing images imbued with a sense of quiet, letting the viewer participate in the artist's own reflections.
Brian Day (b. 1977) is a third generation Detroit native. He discovered photography through the suggestion of a colleague and began exploring documentary and fine art projects around the city using film and digital cameras. Day cites as early influences the work of Ansel Adams, Gordon Parks, Michael

His work has been exhibited both locally and internationally, and published in Scientific American, Hour Detroit, Esquire, Smithsonian, CNN, The Detroit Free Press, The Detroit News, and Metro Times, among others. He was awarded a Documenting Detroit Fellowship in 2016, and was a recipient of the Michigan Chronicle’s Men of Excellence award in 2017, which recognizes creative and influential personalities making a positive impact on the city of Detroit. His recent series Detroit From Above has been much acclaimed and won First Place in Architecture at the International Photography Awards in 2018.
Opened in Ferndale in early 2018, M Contemporary Art primarily represents emerging and established Detroit-based artists whose work spans from painting and sculpture, to photography and mixed-media. Founded by Melannie Chard, a Michigan native who gained experience in client and business development in New York City, the gallery offers local and national clients access to some of the city’s most promising artistic voices.
