Detroit, MI — M Contemporary Art is pleased to announce ARAF, a solo exhibition of paintings by Matt Eaton, opening September 14, 2018 and running through October 6, 2018. ARAF will present a selection of abstract landscape paintings that document the artist’s observations and personal interactions with specific locations in nature, as reconstructed from memory. Each place or experience is stretched to its absolute extreme in an effort to record these moments using the farthest reaches of color, shape, texture and value. The brightly colored works range in size from 12 x 12 inches up to 46 x 90 inches and create a kaleidoscopic experience for the viewer.
“The patterns represent the layers of earth, rock and minerals pulverized and forced into shapes and forms sometimes resulting in fantastic demonstrations of color theory and angular juxtaposition; the more loose and gestural markings are meant to stimulate memories of natural elements like clouds, water, trees and a multitude of biological forms.” -Matt Eaton
Born in California, and raised in London, Matthew Eaton is an abstract painter who explores themes of nostalgia and place using methods and materials common to graffiti, graphic design and typography. His works reflect his desire to connect with nature and the incredibly rich, long legacy of human arts and culture. Eaton's work has been exhibited in galleries, auctions and private collections around the globe, and was also a founding partner in art galleries Library Street Collective and Contra Projects. Currently, Eaton is the Director and Curator of Red Bull House of Art and a partner in Uncommon Editions, both in Detroit.
Opened in Ferndale in early 2018, M Contemporary Art represents both emerging and established Detroit-based artists whose work spans from painting and sculpture to photography and mixed-media. Founded by Melannie Chard, a Michigan native who gained experience in client and business development in New York City, the gallery offers local and national clients access to some of the city’s most promising artistic voices.
