Maccarone Los Angeles
300 South Mission Road
September 17 – December 23, 2016
Maccarone Los Angeles is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new sculptural works by Carol Bove on view from September 17th to December 24th, 2016.
Inaugurating the exhibition courtyard at Maccarone Los Angeles, Bove has arranged four outdoor sculptures. At the entry stands Macaroni (2016), expanding the artist’s “glyph” works -- curvilinear spray-coated steel sculptures that are linguistic in form and playful in their looping gestures.
At the courtyard’s end stands a monolithic slab of petrified wood bolted to an upright I-beam. Love Fashions the Sidereal Body… (2016) elaborates on Bove’s consistent questioning of the relationship between methods of display and ontology. Situated between the two massive sculptures are Cat’s Paw (2016) and Here We Are Again (2016).
Cat’s Paw collages three forms of the same metal: rusted steel scrap, flawlessly matte bent steel tubes, and a glossy black steel disc. Discordant elements situated within a single plane provide a cohesive perspective despite their dissonant nature. Here We Are Again, a twelve-by-twelve-foot stainless steel grid, circumscribes the viewer’s gaze between the piece and its surroundings. The architectural structure provides a shifting frame of the show, teasing out new relationships between the works, the viewer, and the spaces in between.
Solo exhibitions of Bove’s work have been hosted at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; The High Line, New York; Blanton Museum of Art, Austin; Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; and Kunsthalle, Zurich, Switzerland. Group exhibitions include Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; New Museum, New York; Documenta 13, Kassel, Germany; and the 54th Venice Biennial, Venice, Italy. Bove’s work is currently featured in a group exhibition The Keeper, on display at the New Museum, New York, and she recently participated in a two-person traveling exhibition with Carlo Scarpa curated by the Henry Moore Institute, Leeds, England.
