Machado-Muñoz Gallery participates in Arcomadrid 2017 with the design of the ARCO Foundation space.
The main piece of the ARCO Foundation space will be a sofa designed by Lucas Muñoz Muñoz exclusively for Machado-Muñoz Gallery. The gallery also participates in the project of Pilar Briales and Patricia Reznak for the VIP lounge with the production of 100 chairs intervened by the artist Eugenio Ampudia.
The thirty-sixth edition of ARCOmadrid will count on the special participation of Machado-Muñoz collaborating with ARCO Foundation. The Madrid’s gallery, specialized in design, will be the responsible of the ARCO Foundation space. In that space, limited edition furniture from Machado-Muñoz gallery, and furniture from Casa Muñoz will live together.
The main piece of the ARCO foundation space will be a limited edition of sofas exclusively designed for the gallery by Lucas Muñoz Muñoz. They are four sofas composed of three elements only: iron frames, big blocks of foam rubber and neoprene.
This is a technique developed by the designer with which he manages to articulate the function of such a complex furniture piece as a sofa, taking advantage of the physical properties of its three materials. The iron frames define the dimensions and directions that the foam rubber takes when it is comprised and stretched through their elaborated techniques of upholstery. An innovative approach to create chairs and sofas with which this designer gets rid of screws, nails, springs, glue, wood, or any other concealed material. As well as with the sofas specifically designed for ARCOmadrid by Lucas Muñoz Muñoz, the ARCO Foundation space will count on pieces of the designers who usually work with Machado-Muñoz gallery, such as Von Pelt, Anton Alvarez, Grillo Demo, Fredrikson Stallard or Alvaro Catalán de Ocón. Several of these pieces belong to series which have been produced by the gallery.
In addition to this participation, the presence of Machado-Muñoz in ARCOmadrid 2017 is completed through their collaboration with Pilar Briales and Patricia Reznak’s project in the VIP lounge of the fair. For this space, the gallery has produced a series of 100 metallic chairs intervened by the artist Eugenio Ampudia. These are classical Portuguese chairs, in the line of the ones which began to be used in the 30s and 40s in Lisbon. The artist has intervened in the furniture perforating each backrest with 100 different frames of the recording of a hurricane. The chairs leave their marks in space by transferring the picture to the wall through a spray that accompanies each of the pieces. This special series of chairs of Eugenio Ampudia, produced by Machado- Muñoz, signed and numbered, are for sale for collectors.
The design of the ARCO Foundation space and the participation in the development of the VIP lounge, confirm Machado-Muñoz as a unique project in Spain. A different concept of gallery, which opts for the design of unique pieces and limited editions of visual artist and national and international designers.
