Lu Pingyuan, born in 1984 in Zhejiang province, living and working in Shanghai, is a young, one of a kind artist. He expresses his thoughts and art concepts through “stories” he creates: a practice of his own, rare in the art world. His stories - often extraordinary, enigmatic, wondrous, eventually frightening - are all developed from art-related topics.
On March 21, MadeIn Gallery will present Unexpected Discovery a solo exhibition of new works and inexplicable facts collected by the artist.
Lu Pingyuan was born in Jinhua, Zhejiang province. His father practices medicine, and has worked for years in a hospital. Since his childhood, Lu Pingyuan had a passion for art. As he started to work in the contemporary art field, his creations always focused on the nature of art and its history. Until one day, he noticed his father changed: although he had a placid and rational temperament, he started to recount various incomprehensible phenomena, even science couldn’t explain, he had been facing during his career. These surrealistic facts and stories caught Lu Pingyuan’s attention and stimulated his curiosity for enigmas, leading to the writing of these art-related stories.
Unexpected Discovery will reveal years of “fascinating facts” brought out from the shadows by Lu Pingyuan. Presented works will include a cat - fruit of an ambiguous story between Lu Pingyuan and a female cat in 2013 - as well as a special power of art-making taught to the artist by an old man met in 2014 in the Hongqiao district of Shanghai.
