JERSEY CITY, NJ, April 7, 2016—Mana Contemporary is pleased to present threeASFOUR: Tree of Life, a new film by the fashion collective in collaboration with digital artist Alex Czetwertynski. At six minutes, it is a visual leap into the unseen dimensions and connections that bind us, our senses, and the universe, using 3D fractal animation. The film premieres exclusively at Mana Contemporary on May 1 and will screen continuously as an immersive experience through July 9.
In Tree of Life, threeASFOUR and Alex Czerwertynski offer a glimpse of the un-glimpsable as intimate connections between the organic and the mathematical, the transcen- dent and the quantum, are revealed. Using groundbreaking 3D fractal animation, we are taken on a journey within a multiverse of infinite spaces, concealed—matryoshka-like— within imagined anatomical regions of the human body. As we explore these intricate macro and micro landscapes, notions of size, space, and locality become relative. The effect is at first disorienting—yet ultimately reassuring—as we begin to grasp our own place in the cosmos progression.
threeASFOUR is a trio of transnational artists based in New York City who use fashion as their primary artistic medium. Founded in 2005 by the designers Gabriel Asfour, Angela Donhauser, and Adi Gil, the collective has built a legacy of using cutting-edge technology with traditional craftsmanship to create clothing at the inter- section of fashion, sculpture, and mysticism. Recipients of the Cooper-Hewitt/Smithsonian Museum’s 2015 National Design Award, threeASFOUR has collaborated with numerous artists and musicians, including Björk, Yoko Ono, and Matthew Barney. Their experimental designs are in the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Musée de la Mode et du Costume in Paris. Their work has been the subject of multimedia exhibitions at the Jewish Museum in New York (2013) and the Mint Museum in North Carolina (2014), and they have collaborated with Kate Spade (2005) and Gap (2007). Drawing their core aesthetic from the universal language of sacred geometry, threeASFOUR is devoted to the creative exploration of themes of consciousness and cultural coexistence.
