Basel Art Center / Encounters - Contemporary Art from the Middle East
Mark Hachem gallery and Basel Art Center will present a selection of established modern and contemporary artists.
We welcome all art lovers, collectors, and artists to join us at the opening reception on Friday November 4th starting 6 pm.
Mark Hachem gallery will be presenting a collective exhibition of Middle Eastern artists for the project “Middle East Reflections”.
The exhibition includes Art created in the Middle East since around 1980. Given the region's incredible richness and diversity, spanning from the eastern Mediterranean to Pakistan, the category is undoubtly general. Middle Eastern artists often work in contexts with conflict, finding themselves quite often in war zones or at a crossroads between latent tradition and rapid development. In many cases, due to censorship and other constraints, artists who are originally from the Middle East prefer to go work in exile. Those artists often call the West’s prevailing representations of the Middle East into question, by exploring their own displacement from home.
The modern and contemporary Middle Eastern Art market has experienced significant growth since it began gaining recognition among collectors,in the region as globally over the past decade. Twentieth century Arab and Iranian Art has witnessed an extraordinary development that is keeping up with the rich artistic legacy of the region and is reflected in the world's long standing fascination and interest in Middle Eastern art and culture.
