For Art Brussels 2018, Martos Gallery presents a solo booth by Alex Chaves. The artist’s paintings and drawings reveal his unwieldy, comedic explorations of Post-Impressionist and Early Modernist European painting. The highly textured surfaces of Chaves’ canvases are composed of sinuating lines and vibrant blocks of color. This aesthetic dynamism is paralleled by the psychological energy and sensuality of his subjects, especially in his portraits. For the fair, Chaves reinterprets Picasso’s Guernica (1937) in a massive canvas, nearly 2 x 4 meters. This painting is the focal point of Chaves’ presentation of new works, which draw from an eclectic scope of art and imagery.
