Take Pygmalion, for example: The artist working away at lifeless matter in the studio - paint, clay, raw footage, text - trying hard to turn the inanimate animate. The artist trying hard to produce their own counterpart - or is it an extension of themselves?
MAUVE's presentation at Material Fair proposes to explore the relationship between artists and the objects they create through the paradigm of artworks as quasi-subjects. The audience is the third party that comes into play when entering the exhibition and assessing the objects there. The artworks take on the role of a mediator, trying to communicate the artist’s intent. We will undergo the effort of making the complex relationships between artist, artwork and viewer transparent. Putting different strategies in a space, we pursue the goal of investigating subject - object relationships through the artworks themselves. We want to put the capacity of communication that objects of art can convey up for discussion.
