Michael Warren Contemporary (MWC) is pleased to present “The Air in the Room” a showcase of new work by Tom Hoitsma. This show will run concurrently with an exhibition showcasing small works by Mark Rediske.
This series of new works has a physicality that embues a sense of energy even as they give impressions of place. The large size of the works are heavily layered paint on 4" deep canvases that read as sculpture. The confident use of color and assertive brushstrokes create a dynamic visual experience; Hoitsma really does achieve his goal to change the air in the room.
Tom Hoitsma studied art history with Harry Gaugh at Skidmore – this fostered his understanding of Franz Kline and his interest in Abstract Expressionism. In the early 1980’s Hoitsma interned with Miriam Schapiro and then worked at the Barbara Gladstone Gallery where he was introduced to a huge group of up-and-coming artists including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Cindy Sherman and Jenny Holtzer. He lives and works in Dallas, TX and in addition to his painting, Tom has produced a variety of award winning music television series over the years including the documentary series, “The Texas Music Scene” which continues to air throughout the country.
MWC presents contemporary artwork with emphasis on materials and process. The gallery also showcases many artists in the additional viewing rooms in the back of the gallery. MWC consigns an extensive collection of fine art prints from career artists practicing all over the world.
