MILK GALLERY ANNOUNCES MADONNA NYC83, AN EXHIBITION WITH PHOTOGRAPHER RICHARD CORMAN
Exhibition, featuring images of a young Madonna in NYC, will run from November 15 – December 15
NEW YORK CITY, (Oct. 25, 2013) – In 1983, photographer Richard Corman captured images of a young Madonna on the brink. On the verge of releasing her debut album, which would catapult her into stardom, the rebellious young singer was already blazing a trail that would alter the worlds of fashion, music and culture.
Her pioneering attitude reflected the mood of the cultural revolution occurring among the youth in New York City’s then-gritty Lower East Side. Fittingly, this area served as the backdrop for Corman’s photos of Madonna. The resulting images captured not only Madonna the individual, but the spirit of a generation in one of the city’s most controversial neighborhoods.
“Madonna always conveyed an attitude of fierce determination,” said Richard Corman.
“Her humor, sexuality, style and beauty were her own, and more times than not, the photographs were simple and non-prescriptive.”
The Milk Gallery exhibition will feature more than 50 vivid images of Madonna, including
black and white, color, color-treated and multi-media pieces. Corman also arranged for his
collaborative partner, celebrated painter and street artist Alec Monopoly, to create two
unique paintings using original photographs of Madonna. Painting directly onto Corman’s
digital archival prints, Monopoly employs his signature vibrantly-colored graffiti style.
“After 30 years Madonna is as relevant today as she was in 1983,” said Mazdack Rassi, Co-
Founder and Creative Director of Milk. “Richard’s photographs capture Madonna’s
sensibility, style and fashion in a unique and personal way. We have re-created that same
pulsing energy and boldness in our exhibition at Milk Studios, and are excited for
Madonna fans to experience this fascinating collection.”
The exhibition will coincide with the release of Corman’s photographic book, Madonna
NYC83, printed by Damiani editore, copies of which will be available for purchase at Milk
Gallery. Prints will be made by Duggal Visual Solutions. New York Magazine will be the
official media partner for Madonna NYC83. Madonna NYC83 will be open to the public from November 15 – December 15, from 10AM-6PM on weekdays and 11AM-6:30PM on weekends. For more information, please visit
