MILK STUDIOS AND MAGNUM PHOTOS PRESENT MAGNUM CONTACT SHEETS, OPENING AT MILK GALLERY JUNE 27 - JULY 13
An exhibition about the photographic process, MAGNUM CONTACT SHEETS will offer insight into the making of some of the iconic imagery of the legendary photographic cooperative.
This exhibition expands upon the MAGNUM CONTACT SHEETS exhibition that premiered at the International Center of Photography in 2012 featuring 55 pieces from twenty-six photographers including Elliott Erwitt, Susan Meiselas, Rene Burri, Martin Parr, Thomas Hoepker, and Steve McCurry.
MAGNUM CONTACT SHEETS reveals how Magnum photographers have captured and edited their best shots from the 1930s to the present.
The contact sheet, a direct print of a roll or sequence of negatives, is the photographer's first look at what they have captured on film, and provides a uniquely intimate glimpse into their working process. It records each step en route to arriving at an image—providing a rare behind-the-scenes sense of walking alongside the photographer and seeing through his eyes. Including both celebrated icons of photography and lesser-known surprises, the exhibition functions as an "epitaph" to the contact sheet now rendered obsolete by digital photography.
In addition, on Monday June 30 from 6PM – 8PM, guests can gather
more insight into the photographic process with a special Artist Talk
with Magnum photographer ALEC SOTH, whose work has been
featured in the 2004 Whitney and Sao Paulo Biennials. Followed by a
book signing by Jim Goldberg, Mark Power, and Alec Soth on Tuesday July 1 from 6pm – 8PM.
The exhibition also includes Magnum’s photographic book, CONTACT SHEETS, which unveils the creative methods and editing processes used by the renowned photographers, as well as different publications featuring the photographers’ work which will be available for purchase at Milk Gallery.
MAGNUM CONTACT SHEETS runs from June 27 through July 13 at Milk Gallery.
