On February 23rd Miller Gallery opens our newest exhibit, “Fire&Grace”. The all-star show will feature the work of roster artist Jo Hay as well as select artworks by internationally recognized artists Hunt Slonem and Shepard Fairey. This exhibit will be in collaboration with The New Gallery of Modern Art from Charlotte, NC.
We're delighted to showcase the newest paintings by British-American artist, Jo Hay, who is known for her vibrant oil paintings and bold subject matters. “Fire&Grace” will incorporate both human and rabbit portraits by Hay. Her recent series “Persisters”’ depicts societal influencers including Rachael Maddow and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Hay says, “Persisters is an ongoing series of portrait paintings of outstanding women who have made an impression with their tenacious resolve to succeed in their pursuit of justice. I chose Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the second female justice of the US Supreme Court, for her lifelong support of gender equality and equal rights coupled with her bravery in speaking out when fearing the country is in danger.”
Hay received her M.F.A. from The New York Academy of Fine Art and was recently featured in “Queer and Now” at The Tate of London. She and her wife Carolyn Kramer own Jo Hay Open Studios in Provincetown, MA.
Hay's lush, oversized rabbits compliment the intentionally sparse lines used in Slonem's famous bunny series. Each morning Slonem wakes up and starts the day “warming-up” by painting bunnies. Cup of coffee in hand, a stack of wood and masonite panels welcome him to the work table. Slonem and his team choose well-worn frames and repurposed materials to furnish the unique paintings.
Relevant and visually powerful statements by Hay and Fairey will juxtapose the light-hearted rabbits created by roster artist Jo Hay and New Gallery of Modern Art’s Hunt Slonem.
