SAN FRANCISCO – Mirus Gallery is pleased to present "Between Our Eyes" by Portland-based sculptor Meredith Dittmar (US). The opening reception will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. on Friday, January 20 and will be on view through March 3, 2017. The artist will be in attendance during opening reception.
Primarily working with polymer clay, Dittmar's human-animal-plant-energy relief-like amalgams contain threads of common elements and colors to express deep levels of union across themes of biology, technology, and consciousness. The characters are frequently involved in quiet expressive moments, or lounge facing an audience, sharing their inner space. Dittmar believes it is this space we recognize in ourselves, and through convening in that space, the interconnectedness of all things is revealed. The artist sees the act of spontaneous artistic creation as part of a larger practice of being present, and a way to better understand self and reality.
In this show, Dittmar will create an immersive experience for attendees by combining elements of her latest work with a site-specific installation; both working together to enhance the viewer's perception.
From the Artist:
"'Between Our Eyes' refers to the distance between our eyes that gives us the ability for stereopsis to perceive depth and 3-dimensional structure. 'Between Our Eyes' also refers to the difference between perceptions of an illusory reality.
The numerous illusions in the work are allegorical. It presents the viewer with parallax and visual paradox subverting certainty and cultivating a vulnerable curiosity that draws me into the work. Once engaged in the exhibit the ordinary struggle of the creative process takes literal form in the words and easter eggs closeted in the work and functions as pointers, breadcrumb trails, back to the present moment.
I work with demanding perspectives. On an invisible curved surface these lines emerge on their own, discovered and unplanned. Some of the perspectives are quite challenging to hold at the same time... soften your eyes and relax to see them at once… This metaphor serves neatly: Relax a fixed point of view and hold paradox perspectives simultaneously.
Faces are diagrammed to remind me of the illusion of the separate self. These faces in the work also serve as a point of grounding among the persistent themes of angles, archetypes and architecture. They also reward the pathways of confirmation bias by reinforcing the pareidolia experienced by the viewer."

There is an urgency, a Need to create. Compelled, I work to oblige this Need as a conduit, a medium.
This pursuit itself is a teacher, it challenges the assumptions of being and doing, selfhood and separation, actor and action. This work just happens. The mind takes a back seat and something else drives. Or rather there really is no driver, just creating. The body moves, surprising things emerge. The doing informs itself. The self jumps back in and wants a part of it… but the work is there to guide the way back to what is always here and always happening. There is a tendency to ascribe the creative action to an actor. A sort of agenticity of the self giving the credit of creation to the arrogance of the ego. This pursuit represents the last cathedrals of the self. A persistent attempt at resolving original sin, bridging the gap and settling the mystery through the act of continual creation.
Creation creating: form and emptiness ad infinitum.
I do this work until… nothing.
No certainty. No satisfaction. No Need.
ex nihilo nihil (out of nothing comes nothing)"
