The New Gallery of Modern Art is pleased to introduce the work of Marcus Kenney to our Charlotte audience! "As It Was" will feature Marcus' assemblages and collages created over the last few years. Working in many mediums including collage, sculpture, paint, photography, and installation, he credits his aesthetic development to his hero, Robert Rauschenberg. When viewing Marcus' wall and floor works, there is a strong nod to Rauschenberg's Combines, as both artists merge non-traditional materials to form works of art with definitive narratives. Specifically for Marcus, each work is also an extension of himself as he uses his rural-southern upbringing for inspiration, themes, and found objects. Assemblages and collages of deer heads, sequins, beads, lace, leather, pins, buttons, amongst other everyday objects come together via glue, sewing, and nails forming frightful and fanciful works of Southern Gothic, folk art that are completely of his fertile imagination.
