Newzones Gallery of Contemporary Art is pleased to announce “Round About Midnight”, a solo exhibition by Pat Service.
Through this series, Pat Service presents landscapes that contain some of the mystery of jazz music many decades past. Service responds to the landscape with instinctive, expressive and colourful brush strokes, producing in her paintings the textures of nature, the shifting of light and a personal reaction to her surroundings. The paintings' surfaces are marked with expressive colour, reflecting the subtleties of light in both the sky and water. She takes nature as a starting point, and drawing from a tradition of Post-Impressionism and Fauvism, uses surprising colours and intuitive paint application to evoke the spirit of a place.
Born in Alberni, British Columbia, Pat Service received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of British Columbia, and studied part-time at the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland. She has also participated in numerous artist workshops including The Triangle Artists' Workshop in upstate New York and The Emma Lake Artists' Workshop at t¬he University of Saskatchewan. Pat Service has exhibited widely across Canada as well as internationally. Her work is included in many public and corporate collections including the Canada Council Art Bank, Edmonton Art Gallery, and Mendel Art Gallery.
