HOUSTON, TX – Nicole Longnecker Gallery presents dual exhibitions: "Katabasis: A Descent" featuring new work by Cathie Kayser and "In The Hearts of Men" from Boston artist Dorothea Van Camp from April 8 to May 13, 2017. There will be an artists’ reception on Saturday, April 8, from 5-8pm.
SYNOPSIS: Both exhibitions: "Katabasis: A Descent" from Cathie Kayser and "In The Hearts of Men" from Boston artist Dorothea Van Camp, Nicole Longnecker Gallery features new work from two established artists pushing the limits of their processes.
“I’m very excited to exhibit new work from Houston’s Cathie Kayser along with Dorothea Van Camp’s new series,” said gallery owner Nicole Longnecker, “Both of these artists are heading in new directions with their work and artistic careers. I’m positive both will be very well received.”
CATHIE KAYSER: Cathie Kayser is a Houston artist whose work is in collections in Houston, Los Angeles, Seattle, Cincinnati, and Tel Aviv. She is a founder of PrintMatters, an arts organization she began with four other artists in 2009. Kayser works in a variety of printmaking techniques––lithography, woodcuts, intaglio, and monoprints, and teaches workshops in polyester plate lithography.
About the new work Cathie says, “While I sketched, I wrote and I read. I took notes. Then I sketched some more. While reading Jung, I came across the word ‘katabasis,’ a descent into the underworld. I thought about how we walk atop the earth while secret chambers are forming beneath our feet. I feel satisfied that the pieces chosen for this exhibit reflect an underlying structure, but tell their own stories.” Cathie’s new work illustrates an established artist taking a new direction and finding great success.
