Orange Babies South Africa is part of the Dutch Orange Babies charitable foundation or NGO whose purpose is to transform the lives of women and children infected and affected by HIV/ AIDS in Southern Africa. Our NGO’s ultimate hope is to help achieve an HIV-free generation.
Sculptor and performance artist Haidee Nel is a Michealis graduate, where she studied sculpture under the supervision of Jane Alexander and Gavin Young.
This installation, entitled Infantry, consists of 12 figures standing at attention with clenched fists. It raises questions of how we protect our children and how children can protect themselves.
Orange Babies and Haidee Nel felt a collaboration between the two was an appropriate fit, as the work that Orange Babies does is ultimately with the view of protecting children and giving them a chance at a better life without the need to wear the “armour” to protect themselves, and rather have the ability to focus on simply being children. While it is clear that children are at great risk and not enough is being done to protect them, it is the work of organisations such as Orange Babies that begins to change this, and only with a continued and dedicated support of such initiatives can we ultimately make the world a better place.
