The Power of Perception: Man lives, as others think.
"The Home" is perhaps the element of daily life that best reflects how a man lives. It is perhaps also the most basic symbol of his way of life, his mentality. It is almost obvious that man thinks as he lives, but if marginalization is a mental state, then the reverse is true, and we have to say that man lives as he thinks. What is certain is that the home is one of the most utilized elements of daily life which, as a metaphor confers to thus art an unequaled tool to interpret, and illustrate reality
The exhibition The Power of Perception: Man lives, as others think at our PAAP ANNEX space in Little River will focus on emblematic large scale works by both artists that have been included in significant shows.
In the case of Alexis Leyva Machado (Kcho) "Objects of Desire", 2005, it is important to note that this piece was commissioned by the artist for his solo show at the New World Museum in Houston, as one of the artist's first "fishermen's huts". In the case of "The Power of Presence", 2006 by Juan Roberto Diago, the work was exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum in New York 2007-2008 as part of the "Infinite Island" exhibition, one of the most important shows on contemporary Caribbean art.
Both Kcho and Diago have continuously used this element to interpret various phenomena in Cuban reality, and the domesticity of the object provides a universal context. Migration, marginalization, poverty are not exclusive to a specific society: the marginalized, the immigrants, the poor, exist everywhere, and also have a role in our history, in the history of us all.
This common thread of "the home" for the exhibit provides a context to reflect upon who we are, where we live, and (why not?), where we are heading. Because, at the end of the day we all live as best we can in a house.
Kcho and Diago: Early Works
In our Pan American Art Projects space in Little Haiti, we will exhibiti works by both artist from a historic context in the trajectory of their work entitled Kcho and Diago: Early Works, where we will show works in different sizes and mediums from earlier periods of the artists' careers furthering their discourse about a more precise reading of reality, despite the divergence between their concepts.
In the case of Kcho (Alexis Leyva Machado), we will exhibit examples of his large scale works on paper and canvases which in many cases serve almost as fully realized studies that help him flush out his ideas into large scale sculptures and installations. Through this creative process one can see the evolution of his conceptual aesthetic through different paths by experimenting with a variety of mediums.
In the case of Juan Roberto Diago, works on canvas (collages), metal and wood, etc., pertaining to different moments in his creative process will be exhibited, allowing the viewer to have a brief overview in which we can identify examples of the evolution of his work and how the materials he uses play an essential role in how his ideas are manifested.
