PARKVIEW ART Hong Kong is pleased to present GUTAI: The Eternal Avant-Garde. With the resurgence of the longest Japanese avant-garde movement, Gutai is reevaluated as one of the most important art movements of the 20th century. During the active years of Gutai, the movement was often considered second to Western avant-garde movements, yet the recent globalized academia and art market redefined their importance in the global art history.
Works of Gutai artists are believed to be undervalued, this can be seen clearly in the auction market where the hammer price go beyond the high estimate by a large margin. Museums and galleries around the world are also exhibiting Gutai artists to educate the audience about the history and essence of the Gutai movement. This goes to show that collectors, gallerists and academics are all understanding the crucial role that Gutai played. Many of the artists such as Kazuo Shiraga, Shozo Shimamoto and Yasuo Sumi carried on the Gutai spirit even after the movement was disbanded after their founder, Jiro Yoshihara, passed away in 1972. It is because of their unwavering belief in the mantra of Gutai, which is to create works that no one else have ever created before, that they were able to be completely free and to make their mark in the history of art.
PARKVIEW ART Hong Kong will be showcasing a number of Gutai artists including founder Jiro Yoshihara, members Shozo Shimamoto, Kazuo Shiraga, Sadamasa Motonaga, Atsuko Tanaka, Saburo Murakami, and lesser known members such as Yasuo Sumi, Yozo Ukita, and Norio Imai. The selection of works will attempt to show each individual artist’s essence in their creativity and expression.
The market price of many Gutai artists have increased multiple folds in the past few years, and this trend will continue as the public becomes more familiar with them. There are still many Gutai artists that are not being talked about such as Yasuo Sumi and Saburo Murakami, and with the strong market of their peers including Kazuo Shiraga and Shozo Shimamoto, the value of the other artists will surely increase over time.
