Springs, NY -- Steve Cohen and Curtis Cox, partners in life and business and the duo behind The Parsons Close Project, will debut their exhibit at the 14th edition of Aqua Art Miami, named "Best Art Fair" in the 2018 Best of Miami, published by Miami News Times.
The exhibit will include a collection of Steve's recent paintings and assemblies as well as Curtis's ceramics and jewelry, available for viewing December 5th through December 9th during the renowned Art Basel Miami Beach fair and the satellite fairs that make up Miami Art Week.
Steve is an award-winning and four-decade career leader in lighting/scenic/video design for the biggest names in pop, rock and country music. Most notably Billy Joel's longtime lighting designer and creative director. Steve picked up a set of oils and brushes 14 years ago to express his talent for composition and color in the physical medium of the canvas. Curtis began working in ceramics in his youth and comes from a lineage of poets, painters, and engineers. The two artists have very distinct creative processes: one organic and fluid, the other structural and experimental and their practice and work create an interesting dialogue between one another. That exchange is the catalyst for the formation of The Parsons Close Project.
Steve reflected that "I've been painting with light my entire career. But lighting design is ephemeral. Once you see my lighting and video design, it evaporates, and you are left with an impression attached to the music and environment from that moment in time. Painting allows me to channel those visual disciplines in the 3-dimensional world on canvas. My vision becomes permanent. I reach back in my sense-memory of lighting and the emotional impact I create, and I'm pushed to place color and composition on canvas. It is an unconscious channeling of what I see in the world around me every day. I never know what I am going to do before I set out to do it."
"Some works are completely free form, others are structural, where the negative space creates more negative space and that painting tells me what it wants next. The biggest challenge is to know when to stop!"
With Curtis's professional background in engineering and computer science as well as his versatility and creative vision, he has produced video design and custom video content for multiple award-winning artists such as Reba Macintyre, The Eagles, Blake Shelton, Lenny Kravitz, and Billy Joel. He has also installed and programmed video and lighting systems for several of the Princess Cruises newest additions to their fleet of ships.
Curtis has recently expanded his artisan studio to include jewelry making. He works with gemstone beads, silver, copper, titanium and rough gemstone rock that he cuts into cabochons and places within octagonal titanium pendants.
"I use computer-aided design programs to create models which I either print in clay with a 3D printer or cut from sheet metal with a laser. I then use traditional ceramic and jewelry techniques to transform those parts into a final, finished piece. Much of the technology I use in my process is not widely used in the field of ceramics and jewelry."
Their studio is based in Springs, NY, known as the "cradle of the abstract expressionist movement," with a rich history of writer and artist residents, such as Pollock, de Kooning, and Ferran.
