We are proud to announce Orbits, an exhibition of new works by Bay Area ceramic artist Bean Finneran.
Bean Finneran’s studio looks out on a tidal marsh; a fertile region of constant evolution and change which lies between ocean and land. Finneran frequently relates her work to the rhythms of renewal and transformation the natural she observes in the natural world.
Finneran traditionally works with one simple elemental form, a hand-rolled curve of clay, repeated and grouped into organic geometric constructions. The curve is a meditation on multiplicity in nature like individual blades of grass in a field. The clay is a connection to time, to the earth and to human culture. Each time she installs an artwork she assembles it in-situ from dozens or hundreds or thousands of individual pieces. This allows Finneran to respond to the site and to have each piece be different every time it is installed.
Along with these site specific works Finneran will be exhibiting an new series of compositions of disks, blocks and bars. Brilliant in color with a simplicity of form and contrasting surface textures they continue to incorporate her ideas about change and transformation. It is her intention that these block and disc sculptures will be recreated again and again into new compositions of color and form.
