Pentimenti Gallery concludes the winter season and welcomes spring with the work of KIKI GAFFNEY. This show is Kiki’s fifth solo exhibition with Pentimenti Gallery.
Gaffney’s work looks to bring into focus the stunning visual patterns and order within structures we come across daily that can often times be so ingrained in our lives that we give them little thought, or even overlook altogether. By juxtaposing organic, animate shapes with organized design elements, she enables us not only to re-experience, but rather opens a space for contemplation and deeper examination into the relationship between our natural and created ‘atmospheres’. In this sense, the work becomes meditative, inviting the viewer to slow down and appreciate the poetic beauty of configuration and decoration within the landscape which ultimately forms our lives.
For this exhibition, Kiki finds particular inspiration from a series of photographs she took of rock formations at Arches National Park in Moab, UT. The paintings on wood panels explore the rhythmic and whimsical energy found within these natural rock formations that bring forth a sense of grandeur and feeling of being on hallowed ground. The works on paper represent the structural, manufactured patterns she sees around the neighborhood where her studio is located in North Philadelphia. In comparison, these images are presented in a circular, ‘mandala’ form to convey their own sense of a sacred space. Her intention with this work is to visually reflect, as well as conceptually reflect upon, two seemingly separate, yet contextually similar, intertwined surroundings.
Kiki Gaffney graduated from Loyola College, Baltimore (BA), and at the University of the Arts, Philadelphia (MFA).
